Bemerkt und beachtet wurden Cypress Hill zunächst als die ersten Superstars des Latino-HipHop, berüchtigt allerdings wurden sie dank ihrer Werbung für den Genuss von Marihuana, der nicht überall als belanglos angesehen wird. Die Band brach nicht nur eine Kampagne für die Legalizierung der Droge vom Zaun, ihre langsam rollenden Bass- und Drumloops weckten auch den Pioniergeist unter Anhängern des „Stoned Funk“, der in den Neunzigern einer der wichtigsten Einflüsse im HipHop wurde. Hörbar in allen wegweisenden Werken, von Dr. Dres G-funk bis zum chilligen, englischen Trip-Hop.
